The MPhil in Science and Technology Studies (STS) at CREST will introduce students to these different dimensions and aspects of science as a complex social system, with a focus on South Africa. Students can choose between two specialisations and a general programme option. The successful completion of the requirements of the chosen option will result in the MPhil in STS being awarded. View the research topics of current students, and those of the graduates.

General option

This option includes selected contents from both specialisations, thereby affording candidates a unique opportunity to explore science as a social system.

Specialisation: Science and Public Engagement

This option is ideal for people working at the interface between science and society. It is particularly relevant to policy makers, research managers and communication professionals in government departments, universities, science councils, science centres, museums and science-based NGOs. Recent graduates wishing to specialise in science communication and public science engagement will also find this option of interest.

Specialisation: Research Management and Evaluation

This option is ideal for people responsible for the management and evaluation of research. Candidates for this option typically work at research offices at universities, science councils, national research institutes, and research funding organisations. Recent graduates wishing to specialise in aspects of research evaluation will also find this option of interest.
