Five CREST students will be travelling to Venice in September 2022 to participate in a graduate seminar on science communication at Venice International University.

Five CREST students – Lili Rademan, Ntsiki Sackey, Marnell Kirsten, Lali van Zuydam and Chumisa Ndlazi – will be travelling to Venice in September 2022 to participate in a graduate seminar on science communication at Venice International University.

Lili is currently busy with a PhD study on pseudoscience in cancer reporting in the South African online news media, while Ntsiki, Marnell and Lalil will present their PhD proposals to a doctoral admissions committee in August. Chumisa is enrolled for the MPhil in Science and Technology Studies, with a focus on science communication and public engagement.

The theme of the seminar is ‘Science Communication Today: Challenges and Opportunities in the SDGs Era’ and it is taking place from 12 to 16 September 2022. Dr Marina Joubert, senior lecturer at CREST, is one of the invited presenters at this seminar.

The five-day seminar is led by Venice International University (Italy), Stellenbosch University (South Africa), University of Padua (Italy), KU Leuven (Belgium) and Ca’ Foscari University of Venice (Italy). Find out more about the seminar here.

During the seminar, Dr Joubert will lead a sessions about science communication as an academic field of research, as well as about new insights from evidence-based science communication. The CREST students will participate in a ‘performance’ (or role play activity) reflecting on science communication lessons learned during the pandemic.
