FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Stellenbosch, South Africa – 24 April 2024

The South African Research Chair in Science Communication  is pleased to announce that applications for the third iteration of the FicSci creative writing intensive workshop are now open. The workshop is set to take place from 9-12 July 2024 in Stellenbosch, South Africa, and aims to explore the intersection of scientific innovation and creative writing.

After conducting two successful workshops, the FicSci team has released the FicSci 01 anthology, flow, and is scheduled to release the FicSci 02 publication later this year. This workshop provides a unique opportunity for writers to interact with current scientific research and use it as inspiration to create original pieces that respond to the ideas of a leading scientist.

Convened by Prof Mehita Iqani and Dr Wamuwi Mbao, this workshop cultivates a dynamic dialogue between writers and scientists. “We are looking for creative writers dedicated to their task, who are open to new experiences and interested in pushing their own work in new directions,”  remarks Prof Iqani. Dr Mbao adds, “FicSci is above all, experimental – we see it as an opportunity to imagine thinking towards interesting ideas about how we imagine ourselves in relation to science.” Through an interdisciplinary lens, writers will contribute a publication that will reflect the richness of their collective responses.

Applications for FicSci are open to creative writers from all genres and sectors and are due by 22 May 2024 at 23: 59. Up to ten creative writers will be selected and will receive support for domestic travel and accommodation, with in-person, full-time sessions held in Stellenbosch.
