Alongside the taught coursework and research-only MA in Journalism from the Department of Journalism, there is the possibility of undertaking a research master’s degree linked to the SA Research Chair in Science Communication.
Research masters-level degrees require candidates to conceptualize and implement an original research project, under supervision, and to submit a thesis reporting on the work. The entry requirements for a research MA are an existing Honours-level qualification with strong academic performance therein.
We also invite candidates interested in PhD level study in the broad area of science communication to contact us to explore opportunities. The entry requirements for a PhD are an existing M-level qualification with strong academic performance therein.
The Chair is open to considering and supporting postgraduate research project proposals that engage with the following, but not limited, research areas of media and communications research, as per the “science communication for social justice” research agenda:
- Air pollution and related social, economic, and health issues,
- Compassion,
- Climate change communication, climate anxiety, activism, apathy,
- Ethical and/or green consumption,
- Food communication, food cultures, food safety and consumer sciences,
- Health communication,
- Health and well-being, including misinformation, distrust, and suspicion, of scientific interventions,
- Legal understandings of science communication
- Luxury and technological and scientific innovation,
- Racial, gender and LGBTIAQ+ equity in public profiles of scientists,
- Science of happiness,
- Social and scientific rejuvenation of rivers, dams, streams,
- Waste and recycling (aesthetics and ethics),
- Any kind of media practice project in relation to any of the above themes, such as action, research filmmaking, podcast production and visual arts.
Qualifying candidates in need of financial aid will be able to apply to the NRF for support, provided they meet the NRF’s qualifying criteria and submit an application through its central application platform. Candidates should be mindful of stipulated timeframes. Applications for 2024 close on 11 July 2023. Please note that proposed projects must be approved by the Chair before submitting a scholarship application to the NRF. Please contact the Chair as soon as possible in order to adhere to the NRF’s timeframes. Applications submitted before the approval of the Chair will not be considered.
The Chair and relevant academic and support staff assess the queries for post-doctoral studies for academic merit, fit to SciCom’s research strategy, the overall balance of work across research areas, and supervisory capacity. On these grounds, decisions are made, and applicants are informed of the outcome.
