Dr Tebogo Makhubela is a senior lecturer at the Department of Geology, University of Johannesburg. 

The FicSci convenors are thrilled and proud to announce that Dr Tebogo Makhubele has been chosen as the scientist for the writer’s workshop.

Dr Makhubela is a Quaternary Geologist and Speleologist, currently serving as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Geology at the University of Johannesburg. His work focuses on fossil-bearing deposits in the Cradle of Humankind UNESCO World Heritage Site, which are among the leading sites where key hominin fossils have been discovered. A National Geographic Explorer, he is also committed to science communication. He features as “Geotime” in the acclaimed SuperScientists initiative, which introduces school children to the marvels of science through comics and animation.

The workshop takes place between 7 and 10 July 2025, where selected writers will write a response to Dr Makhubela’s presentation. The writers are at liberty to write whatever they wish in their chosen format, which will form part of a publication that will emerge from the workshop.
